Biography - Judge Gerald Goodwin

Judge Gerald GoodwinGerald Goodwin, a native of Angelina County, graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a B.S. in Political Science in 1966, and from the University of Houston Law School with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1971.

After practicing as an Assistant District Attorney in Harris County for two years, and spending one year in private practice, Goodwin returned to his home in East Texas, serving as the Assistant District Attorney in Angelina County in 1974- 75, and then as the District Attorney in Lufkin from 1975 through 1990, earning a reputation as one of the most tenacious and successful prosecutors and trial lawyers in the state of Texas.

In 1990, Judge Goodwin was appointed to the state district bench. He served as district judge of the 159th judicial district from 1990 until his retirement in December of 2000. Upon his retirement, Goodwin joined Chandler, Mathis & Zivley, PC in an “Of Counsel” capacity.

Goodwin has received numerous accolades and awards in his professional career, including serving as a Director of the Texas District and County Attorneys’ Association, President of the Angelina County Peace Officers’ Association, and being awarded Martindale-Hubbel’s highest rating (“AV”).

In addition, his contributions to his community are unparalleled. In addition to receiving the Angelina County Chamber of Commerce Golden Anvil Award for greatest contribution to the community in 1988, the Peace Officer of the Month Award in 1986, and the Lufkin Lions Club Distinguished Service Award, he has been President of the Angelina County Peace Officers Association, State Director of the Texas High School Rodeo Association, Chairman of the Law Enforcement Council of the Angelina County Chamber of Commerce, member of the Board of Directors of the Angelina County Exposition Center, and Chairman of the Lufkin ISD Task Force on School Violence.
